It has come to our attention that you may have some misperceptions about our organization. We welcome the opportunity to address any concerns that you may have as well as to educate you about our programs.
You are probably aware of the international media focus on the tragic death of 10-year-old Candace Newmaker, who was being treated by Connell Watkins and Associates in Evergreen. The treatment technique being utilized at the time was "rebirthing." Some of the media coverage has not been very clear in differentiating between The Institute for Attachment & Child Development and Connell Watkins and Associates.
We are writing to share the facts of this situation with you so that you can be accurately informed.
- In Evergreen, Colorado, there are at least six different programs or clinics that provide attachment therapy.
- Connell Watkins and Associates is not connected with The Institute for Attachment & Child Development (IACD).
- IACD does not use "rebirthing techniques", nor do we utilize any therapeutic techniques that put a child in danger or at risk of harm.
- IACD is in compliance with all State of Colorado Rules, Regulations, and Standards, including Quality Standards for 24-Hour Care of Children. The Institute for Attachment & Child Development served on the Task Force which developed these Quality Standards. Child Care Licensing for Colorado is pleased with the quality and safety measures we have implemented.
- IACD has a comprehensive Quality Improvement Program with an active Safety/Risk Management Committee which continuously evaluates all aspects of the program. Of primary concern to this committee is ensuring the safety of the children we serve.
- IACD has conducted research and outcome studies which indicate a 75% - 85% effectiveness rate with children treated at IACD.
- Attachment Therapy is a unique synthesis of many different techniques, which are employed to facilitate the development of attachment between child and parent. These are rooted in an understanding of neurobiological factors; the function of memory; the effects of trauma, grief and loss; and the critical importance of attachment to the healthy development of a child. Treatment occurs within the context of a safe, nurturing, respectful environment.
- Holding Therapy is not the same as restraint. Restraint is used only by people trained in its proper use and only when a child is in immediate danger of harming self or others. Holding Therapy is done with the consent of the child. IACD uses an across the lap, developmentally appropriate, nurturing posture for the purpose of facilitating the safe expression of feelings and processing of traumatic events and/or memories.
